Accessibility

We have a range of measures in place to try and ensure our venue is accessible as possible to people.

Accessible Seating

Royal Court Liverpool has recently undergone refurbishment and there is full disabled access to the stalls level.

The seats that are accessible to wheelchair users are either in the front four rows (A,B,C and D) or on the back row near to the bar or toilets. These can be booked by groups of any size.

If you would like a specific section then please ask when you book and we will do our best to ensure that you are seated in that area. We cannot guarantee seats in a particular area as it depends on the number of wheelchair places already booked and the sizes of their groups.

We now have a lift that provides access to all levels but there is no wheelchair accessible seating in the circle or balcony.

If you have access requirements then we ask that you aim to arrive half an hour before the performance start time to ensure easy access to your seats.

Captioning

Captioning is now available at performances in the final week of each main house show. With either a pair of our captioning glasses or one of our tablets you can read the actors’ lines as they are said on stage. Book your equipment by emailing boxoffice@liverpoolsroyalcourt.com

We would like to thank Arts Council England and the The Theatres for their support with the captioning system.

Assistive Listening

We now have an Assistive Listening system in place (similar to a loop system). We are using Sennheiser Mobile Connect which is an app that can be downloaded to your own phone and you can bring your own headphones if you choose. Click here for more details about the system. If you don’t have a smartphone or need to borrow some headphones then just let us know.

Audio Described and British Sign Language Performances

There will be an Audio Described performance and a British Sign Language performance for most shows, details are here, on each show page or you can call Box Office 0151 709 4321 for more information.

Carers Tickets And The Access Card Scheme

We are pleased to be working with Nimbus Disability, using their Access Card Scheme to provide our customers with access requirements a more consistent and better experience. Apply for your Access Card now.

We will use the scheme for all customers that require support, such as an essential companion or carer ticket or other provisions.

All attendees requiring these access provisions will need to go via Nimbus to have their access requirements validated so we can not only provide those reasonable adjustments, but protect them from potential misuse.

You will be able to submit a free application for a Royal Court Digital Access Pass (DAP), via Nimbus to enable you to purchase tickets and other access facilities. As part of this, you will need to provide relevant evidence in order for Nimbus to allocate the symbols that represent the barriers you face. This lasts for 3 years, so once you have applied and it’s been approved, that’s it!

Already got an Access Card? You’re sorted! Have a look at our FAQs below for what to do next.

Access Card Scheme FAQs

What is the difference between an Access Card and a Royal Court Digital Access Pass?

An Access Card is a universal way of conveying your access requirements with thousands of organisations, venues, events and ticketing systems in the UK and beyond.

You can purchase an Access Card for £15 for 3 years.

A Royal Court Digital Access Pass is a free way of conveying your access requirements, just with Liverpool’s Royal Court. You still go through the same process, but receive a digital number and no card.

How can I apply for a Royal Court Digital Access Pass?

To apply for your Royal Court Digital Access Pass, please click here and go through the simple application form and upload any validating evidence along with some narrative about your access requirements.

Already got an Access Card or what do I do once I have a Royal Court Digital Access Pass?

Once you have your Royal Court Digital Access Pass Number (found on your confirmation email) or to use your Access Card you will need to give the staff at the Royal Court your DAP Number or Access Card Number when making a booking.

I have various access requirements, what should I do?

Whilst we are trying to enable all of our access customers to book online, occasionally this isn’t possible. For those guests requiring multiple essential companions or if you have specific access requirements, please contact our access team on 0151-7094321 or email boxoffice@liverpoolsroyalcourt.com and we will do all we can to make your visit a great experience.

Why is the process changing and how does this benefit me?

We really want to ensure our shows are as accessible as possible, and we want to understand your needs and requirements.

In order to provide a consistent service and to prevent misuse of the system, we are working with Nimbus.  We can use their recognised and award-winning scheme to enable us to provide a great and accessible experience.

Our commitment to accessibility remains unchanged. Our friendly team and staff are still here to support you if you have any questions or need assistance. For further support, please email boxoffice@liverpoolsroyalcourt.com

Relaxed Performances

Relaxed Performances are all about making everyone feel right at home in our theatre. We know that coming to see a show can sometimes feel a bit much — especially if loud noises, big crowds or new places aren’t your thing. So, during these performances, we keep things a little more easy-going.

They’re perfect for anyone who might prefer a more laid-back atmosphere — including people with autism, dementia, learning disabilities, mental health conditions, or anyone who might make involuntary noises. There’s no pressure here, no judgement — just a friendly space where you can enjoy the show your way.

We work with our creative, technical and Front of House teams to make the show as relaxed and comfortable as possible. Here’s what you can expect at a Relaxed Performance:

  • The lights in the auditorium stay slightly on, so you’re never in complete darkness.
  • You can move about, come and go, or make noise whenever you like — no problem at all.
  • We’ll send out a pre-show info pack  with a story summary, photos, details of any louder moments, and tips for getting around the theatre.
  • There’s a quiet “Chill Out” area Front of House if you need a break from the action.
  • Stage lighting is softened a little, and any extreme sound or light effects are toned down or removed if needed.
  • Companions or carers can come for free if required and with a valid Nimbus card.
  • If you’d like to pop in before the show to get to know the space, we can arrange that too.

It’s all about making sure everyone feels welcome, comfortable and able to enjoy the performance in their own way.
