“Whatever Happened To Billy Kenny?”
It’s the question asked by thousands of Evertonians across the last three decades. In this stunning one man show, built on Billy’s own words and written with his full co-operation, you’ll hear the answer.
The world at his feet at 19, Man Of The Match in the Merseyside Derby while still on a YTS contract, hailed by Peter Beardsley as ‘The Goodison Gazza’; sacked by Everton and retired by the time he was 21; this is the tale of a potentially glittering career lost to injury, to alcohol, to cocaine.
Jay Johnson (‘Nowhere Boy’, ‘Little Boy Blue’, ‘Boiling Point’) will take you on Billy Kenny’s journey from Burlington Street to the very top. And then all the way down.
It’s a story about how massive talent isn’t always enough, about addiction, struggles with mental health, and how the help that one young man needed may not have existed when he needed it, and how our surroundings sometimes define and trap us.
Produced and written by Ian Salmon (Girls Don’t Play Guitars, The Comeback Special, Those Two Weeks)
Directed by Mike Dickinson (Raves’R’Us, Not The Horse, Bob The Russian)
